Legend has it that the Devas (celestial beings) approached Shiva for help, unable to bear the tyranny of the Asura (demon) Muran. According to Padma Purana, Shiva directed them to seek Vishnu’s help. In the battle against Muran, Vishnu felt the need for a new weapon. He also sought refuge in a cave for rest. Muran entered the cave and almost slew Vishnu- however, a female energy emerged from Vishnu and destroyed the Asura. Vishnu was impressed by the feminine energy and called her ‘Ekadasi’.
