Vishnu’s Divine Deeds Using Sudharshana Chakra

Sudharshana Chakra is mentioned in Rig Veda, the earliest of four Vedas, as the symbol of Vishnu. This supreme weapon is wielded, controlled, and powered by Vishnu’s thoughts. Various scriptures have highlighted Vishnu using his Supreme weapon for the welfare of humanity, protection of his devotees, and establishing righteousness.

• Birth of Shakti Peetas in India – After Parvati in the form of Sati was sacrificed in the Yagna (grand Fire Lab) of his father, Shiva was roaming with her corpse, unable to bear her loss. For the welfare of the universe, Vishnu used his Sudharshana Chakra and cut the body of Sati into 51 pieces, and the place where each body part fell became the Shakti Peetas in India.
• Punishing the Deceitful Act of a Demon – When Vishnu’s Mohini avatar was distributing the Amrita (Elixir of Life), a demon named Swarbhanu disguised as a Deva (celestial being) received it. Surya (Sun God) and Chandra (Moon God) identified this deceitful act, and as a result, Vishnu beheaded the demon with his Sudharshana Chakra. The head and the body of the demon became Rahu and Ketu, respectively.
• Helped His Devotee – In Mahabharata, there are a couple of instances where Krishna, an avatar of Vishnu, used Sudharshana Chakra to help his ardent devotee, Arjuna, and to establish dharma (righteousness). He used his divine weapon to temporarily hide the Sun and made Jayadratha (who was under the protection of Guru Drona) come out of his protection so that Arjuna could kill him and avenge the death of his son. In another instance, Krishna, as promised to his cousin, tolerated 100 insults from his cousin’s son named Sisupala. He used Sudharshana Chakra to behead him after the 101st insult. Sisupala’s soul merged with Krishna as Sisupala is considered one of the gatekeepers of Vaikunta, the abode of Vishnu.

Sudharshana Chakra in Mythology

Intending to attain a powerful weapon to destroy the Asuras (Demons), Vishnu started praying to Shiva, who was in deep meditation. Vishnu offered his sincere prayers by revering Shiva with one thousand lotus flowers every day. His prayers continued for years, and one day when Shiva opened his eyes, Vishnu had gone to pick a thousand lotus blossoms to offer him. Shiva wanted to play a trick on Vishnu and hid one of the flowers. Unable to complete his prayers, Vishnu sacrificed his eyes as the thousandth flower at the feet of Shiva. Pleased with Vishnu’s pure love and devotion, Shiva blessed him with the sacred and powerful weapon, Sudharshana Chakra, which has the power to absolve sins, eradicate evil and protect the universe.
